You don’t need a referral to book an appointment. However, without a referral you can only receive a rebate if you’re a member of a Private Health Fund. If you’d like to claim a rebate through Medicare you’ll need a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHCP) and referral from your GP.

During your first session, we’ll talk about the issues that have brought you into therapy and your Psychologist will ask questions about your background history. This will include information about your family, social relationships, work history and any past treatment you may have had. Your Psychologist will then discuss with you your treatment options and you’ll collaborate to set some goals.

Yes, we think therapy is important! So, we want to make it as accessible for you as possible. You can choose to have your session face to face or via telehealth if this suits your needs better. Please ensure you have access to a working camera and microphone and privacy, should you opt for a telehealth appointment.

A standard consultation is 50 minutes.

We appreciate that sometimes life happens. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment 48 hours’ notice is required. The fee for cancelling or rescheduling your appointment within 24-48 hours is 50% of the full session fee, and within 24 hours the full fee is charged. We’ll remind you of this policy at the time of booking.

Yes, all your information will be kept confidential as all our psychologists abide by professional code of ethics. As per legal requirements your information is stored and not accessible by anyone else. There are exceptions to confidentiality in the context of legal processing’s and/or risk however these will all be discussed prior to therapy.

Psychologists focus on providing assessment and therapy working with the client using talking therapies. A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor and can prescribe medication.

A Clinical Psychologist will have studied a Master’s or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology; whereas a psychologist may have studied one of a number of varying postgraduate degrees. The main difference is the number of years studying. A Clinical psychologist will have done a minimum of 6 years university education plus a two-year registrar program to be eligible for clinical endorsement. A psychologist would have completed a minimum of 4- or 5-years university education followed by a two- or 1-year internship program. Both are registered as an Australian practitioner in Australia and able to work with you.

No, at Psychology Rooms we do not bulk bill. However, we appreciate in certain circumstances more level of support is needed and try our best to make this work. If this is you, give us a call and we can discuss further.

Yes, many private health insurance providers provide coverage for mental health counselling. This will differ depending on your insurance provider, level of coverage and the qualifications of the clinicians you seek to engage with at Psychology Rooms. We advise contacting your insurance provider to understand what is available to you and the qualifications your clinician will need for you to be covered through your plan.

At Psychology Rooms, we don’t write reports for court, unless subpoenaed.
